I haul from 487 Laundry, go to Sparinese and Caserta. Start at 7:30 a.m., lasts till 4:45 p.m. Fair weather.

Truck is on haul. Rain last nite and today.

Thursday, April 27, 1944
I go on trip Aversa to 0425, start 4:30 a.m., return 1:20 p.m. 94 mile trip. Radio broadcast from our battalion theater in evening and stage show.

Friday, April 28, 1944
Truck is on haul. I see "This is the Army" in Santa Maria, with Irving Berlin in person. Our company wins ball game 1 to 0 from 105 AAA in our second league game.

Saturday, April 29, 1944
I make trip Q 55 to Q 53, 9:30 a.m. to 4:50 a.m. Our ball team wins from 425 Laundry 6 to 1. Our third league game. Three wins, no defeats. Air raid over Naples at 10 p.m.

Truck on haul. Pay day. Our company beats CWS 6 to 3 in softball.

Monday, May 1, 1944
I go on haul from E 211 to French truck head from 8:45 a.m. till 3:30 p.m. Our ball team beats PUR, 24 to 0 in fourth league game.

Tuesday, May 2, 1944
1,000 mile check on truck.

Wednesday, May 3, 1944
Truck on trip. Our company beats Batt C, 405 AAA , 3 to 0 in league game.

Thursday, May 4, 1944
I haul 817 Q.M. shower unit to Teano, make two trips, 7:45 a.m. till 2:30 p.m.

Truck goes on trip. Our team beats 56th Med. 7 to 2.

Quiet day. See movie, "The Phantom Lady."

I work with truck in Q 53. Homblad there too. Six months ago today, we same two get shelled and had air raid while doing same type of work.

Truck is out, not much doing around camp.

I haul mail APO 541 to APO 88.

Truck goes on haul. I see move "The Uninvited."

Here is the inspiration and primary source for this entire blog. Note the year for these entries was actually 1943, although Howard was using pages from 1942, as evidenced by the mention of the cities of Morsot and Tebessa and the fact that Howard was still in basic training in Texas in March 1942. He had to be creative with his limited resources and use whatever paper was available, which made researching this project somewhat of a puzzle at first.
