Company moves to Piombino, another 100 miles or so up the coast. I make a nite trip to 0403 to 0411 ammo.

I make trip, a nite haul to same place, air raid at 1 a.m., bombs drop nearby.

Sleeping today, good run in afternoon. Continue to haul ammo for next few days.

We make some runs. Have been swimming twice and saw one GI stage show lately.

Have been doing same kind of work. Return on August 1st from 7 day trip, Siena to Naples. Haul French. Pull bulldozer on trailer. Had pass in Naples. Send $25 PTA home today.

Five day rest in Rome rest camp. See about everything. Buy pictures and souvenirs. Work continues about the same. Saw Pope Pius XII and St. Peter's Cathedral on this trip.

Here is the inspiration and primary source for this entire blog. Note the year for these entries was actually 1943, although Howard was using pages from 1942, as evidenced by the mention of the cities of Morsot and Tebessa and the fact that Howard was still in basic training in Texas in March 1942. He had to be creative with his limited resources and use whatever paper was available, which made researching this project somewhat of a puzzle at first.
